Chapter 9

Helping Old Friends

It was early; the sun hadn’t risen yet as Charles walked outside and stood in the darkness viewing the backyard. The boys were sleeping in a makeshift tent. Charles noticed a movement coming towards him and knew from the way it moved that it was Ghost.

“You are up early,” Charles said.

“Yes, so are you father,” Ghost answered.

“Is everything Ok?” Charles asked him.

“Yes, I think so,” Ghost answered.

“What do you mean; you think so?” Charles asked.

“It is hard to live like a white man,” Ghost answered. “I liked living in the camp with the others. Whites fence their property and you’re not allowed to walk on their land without permission. They make you wash your hands before you eat, and make you use forks and spoons to eat.”

“I know life is different,” Charles said, “But you must adapt and change. You are in for many more changes; some will be good, some you will not like. We will meet many new people; some will try to help us, and some may try to kill us. I must tell you something Ghost; I will need you and Matt’s help. Go, awaken Matt, I need to talk to both of you.”

Soon Matt and Ghost came, and Charles asked them to sit on the ground with him.

“Listen boys,” Charles said, “Today we’re leaving to travel east. You will both see the city for the first time. There are many people that live in cities, some are good, and some are bad. Sometimes it is hard to tell who is bad, and who is good. Sometimes people try to be nice to you, only to be able to hurt you, or steal from you. Trust your own judgment; go by your gut feelings. If you’re getting bad feelings, then they are probably bad people.”

‘There is a man by the name of Adam Feltner; he is one of the bad ones that try to be nice to get his way. He hires men to kill other people; he pays men money to do bad things. I had trouble with Adam when he was here in Denver, and I’ve been warned that he may try to have me killed when we get to Philadelphia,” Charles explained.

“I’ve been told that when he can’t find someone he may try to kill or injure the man’s wife and children to bring him out in the open. So you boys, Little Sunbird, White Bear and your mother could be in danger, as well,” Charles added.

“When we get to Philadelphia, we will go to your Grandmother’s house to stay. Your mother has told me she lives on a beautiful estate outside of town. I want you boys to remember what I have taught you about watching for trouble, people acting suspiciously, and people sneaking around. Your job will be to protect your little brother, sister, and your mother. Beware of everything around you at all times, a strange sound, something out of place, and especially people you’ve never seen before,” he said as he looked into their eyes.
